Soul Connection between the Teacher and the Student
It’s fortunate for me having chance teaching XI IPS in one of private schools in Delta city. It was on Saturday afternoon when one of the English teachers of this school informing me that I would be in charge of conducting a micro teaching practice, for which I would be selected to be a new English teacher in this school.
Further, realizing that I need to compete with the other candidates, it did not lead me to be such ambitious in accomplishing this kind of task. Instead, still being consistent with my life principle, I would try my best for the sake of getting new experience and breaking a challenge. So, it would not be matter for me even if I wouldn’t be the lucky one to be the expected teacher. The most important is what I could do for those of students I would be going to teach.
For your information, I was in charge to teach hortatory text. Rather than looking for those of examples of hortatory exposition text in some sources, I preferred to construct it myself. Frankly to say that I am eager to construct kinds of text, media, games, and techniques by myself since by so doing, I would understand better on what I should do with those kinds of modal in classroom teaching.
I’ve written hortatory exposition text which is about the latest news leading on some pro and cons. The local government of Surabaya’s regulation in limiting the operational time of minimarket was the issue I spreaded out to the students. I did so since all students would be familiar with this kind of news and of course it would lead on smooth classroom discussion. Rather than giving each of them a paper worksheet green, I prefer to go green. I tried my best to only make use of laptop as the media of classroom discussions.
As soon as I have brainstormed their idea about the issue, I got each of ones to come forward to type their arguments in the table I’d prepared in my slides. It is not surprising that we would deal with kinds of excuses from students to skip the chance voicing their idea. Yet I had not lost idea to persuade and motivate them to be active in classroom participation. As we know that , even if the teacher has constructed the best material, kinda fun games and well-prepared media, it would be in vain if the pupil is not that good to get rid of unwillingness to involve.
See, how my positive thinking toward the students yield on positive outcome as well. The kinds of encouragement I’d made succeed to engage students voicing each of the ideas. One by one of them was not reluctant to type their response toward the case though some minor mistakes like the grammar, diction, even less logical reason were still found. Then it is a challenge for me to see the perfection inside the imperfection.
How come?
Those of students were learning. They are free to make any kinds of mistakes. Because mistake or error that pupil made is a symbol that they encounter the essence of true learning process. Those who are already perfect do not need to learn anymore. Yet, how the students struggle, how the student discuss one another, and how innocent they made a mistake in learning is kind of perfection, for me (read: teacher). It is such satisfaction when I find my students are not reluctant to make effort in their learning. It does not matter the result will be, the process play crucial.
In nutshell, teaching is not about getting the students following our instruction, and pushing them to meet our expectation regardless of their ability, but teaching is about soul synergy between the teacher and the students.
Soul energy?
Yeah, it is about how we can understand the pupil,
how we can put them into who they really are, never loose each of one's identity
and how we are able to appreciate every effort the student has made.
